Should the Redskins trade for Panthers WR Steve Smith?

According to the Charlotte Observer, Carolina Panthers WR Steve Smith could be on the trade block, if so, should the Washington Redskins trade for him? I say the Redskins should do it in a heartbeat. The Carolina Panthers are a terrible team this year and the organization is in disarray. John Fox is finishing out his contract and most likely will be gone at the end of the season and they are starting a rookie quarterback, Jimmy Clausen, under center. It makes sense for the Panthers, an organization no where near sniffing the playoffs this year or most likely next, to get what value they can for the veteran and move forward with their rebuilding plans.

The benefit for the Washington Redskins is two-fold. First, Smith is under contract for two years, unlike Vincent Jackson who would have been a one year rental and was demanding a big time, long term contract. Second, it’s obvious that the Redskins need play makers on offense. Smith is unhappy in Carolina, and at the age of 31, realizes he might be running out of chances to return to the playoffs, especially with the Carolina Panthers. Smith only has 11 receptions this season. That is not an endorsement of his playing skills decreasing, it simply reflects how poor the Panthers offense has been so far.

I would imagine that Smith could be had for a fourth round pick. This would be a move that would be smart for the Redskins.

Better yet, I realize player for player trades are rare in the NFL but how about Albert Haynesworth for Steve Smith?

Washington Redskins fall flat against St. Louis Rams

The Washington Redskins fall flat against the lowly St Louis Rams on the road, losing 30-16. The Redskins turned the ball over twice, went 0-3 inside the red zone and were 1 of 10 on third downs, that kind of offensive performance simply won’t get it done in the NFL. The Washington Redskins also only managed to have 50 offensive plays during the game.  At times during the game, it was hard to tell which quarterback was the 12 year veteran and which was the rookie starter.

The strength of the Redskins, the team defense, yielded 365 yards to the St. Louis Rams which snapped a 13 game home losing streak. This is the second consecutive week that an opposing team has hung 30 points on the Redskins defense. And don’t look now, but here come the high flying Philadelphia Eagles

This game showed just how poorly the Redskins offense is executing, and this performance follows a game where Donovan McNabb put up 426 passing yards last week against the Houston Texans. McNabb only passed for 236 yards and after three games, now has only two passing touchdowns. The lack of significant play makers on offense is now apparent.

It should have been noted in the preseason that the lack of play makers on the Washington Redskins team would eventually catch up with them. Seriously, were Willie Parker, Larry Johnson and Joey Galloway really going to intimidate opposing defenses? I realize Parker and Johnson are now gone, but it was the overall direction that Bruce Allen was heading win acquiring players who are at the end of their careers.

And I do understand that Donovan McNabb missed several weeks of preseason with an ankle injury, but he is a 12 year veteran and by week three you’d think he should be able to get the offense rolling. I would not have believed after three weeks of play, he’d only have two passing touchdowns. There is some serious work ahead to get this thing turned around.

What would a week be without another Washington Redskin DT Albert Haynesworth incident? This time Albert Haynesworth took to the airwaves to proclaim that just because he signed a 100 million dollar contract, he wasn’t a slave, just because someone pays you, they can’t make you do things. Seriously, what planet is guy from? You can listen to the interview for 106.7 The Fan, right here.

Washington Redskins/St. Louis Rams preview

I’ve just posted the second part of the Q and A with Will Horton from the Fanball Network. Will covers the st. Louis Rams at the RamsHerd website and  Will asked me the questions about the Washington Redskins and what Rams fans should expect this weekend. You need to check his site out to see my answers about what the Redskins should expect this week. You can check out my response and if you are a Twitter kind of NFL fan, make sure to follow Will on Twitter at @RamsHerd.

For those of you Washington Redskins fans who thought I was crazy in suggesting the Redskins trade for San Diego Chargers WR Vincent Jackson, look at this statistic and spin this- on the ESPN NFL receiving yards page of the top 40 receivers, Santana Moss comes in at 166 yards, but he is the only receiver on the list who has his longest reception at 17 yards.  6 yard slants to Moss will not advance the Washington Redskins to the playoffs. It will be a long season for the Redskins at the receiver position.
