Your new Washington Redskins starting quarterback? Michael Vick.

Philadelphia Eagles QB Michael Vick has rejuvenated his game this season, he’s playing better than ever (the NFL is even postponing games on his behalf) and will he be the next quarterback of the Washington Redskins in 2011? The Washington Post gives the scenario a 50:1 chance. I say the chances of seeing Michael Vick wearing a Redskins uniform in 2011 are about as good as walking out your front door and seeing a purple unicorn. Never going to happen.

The Redskins already tried on for size a former Philadelphia quarterback and head coach Mike Shanahan didn’t like the way he fit. Shanhan loved Donovan McNabb at the start of the relationship, but after several weeks, Shanahan was trying to rid himself of McNabb like a college kid trying to rid himself of a clingy girlfriend.

There is no way on the face of this earth that the Philadelphia Eagles will let Michael Vick walk at the end of this season, regardless of how the Eagles finish the season. I think Vick could throw four interceptions in a playoff game and the Eagles would sign him to a huge contract.

An experienced quarterback, as talented as Vick is this season, is not the long term answer for the Washington Redskins. This team must be purged and a new start from scratch mentality undertaken. The sooner the coaches and the fan base understand this, the sooner this can happen. No more piecemeal veterans, no more 39 year old wide receivers, 34 year old running backs. Stop with the insanity already. Enough. No more high priced useless free agents. Build through the draft. Add value free agents as the youth starts to come around. This process has worked for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, a team which has improved 6 games over their record in 2009. When is the last time the Washington Redskins improved 6 games in one season over the last one? Exactly.

Mike Shanahan wants Donovan McNabb back….as a backup in 2011

The Washington Redskin’s season and their coach continue to defy logic as this bizarre season rolls on with Redskins head coach Mike Shanahan stating that he would welcome veteran QB Donovan McNabb back next season as a back-up. A $10 million dollar backup? Really?

This current situation just becomes more odd at every twist and turn. Shanahan loved the fact the Redskins traded for McNabb in the offseason, some fold even speculated that the Redskins had made enough moves to make it to the playoffs, but now, offering McNabb a backup spot next season? Has Mike Shanahan lost his mind? Does he need some medication?

Seriously. I understand that if Mike Shanahan doesn’t like McNabb fine. But if he is basing this decision on his son’s opinion of McNabb, then the Redskins made an epic mistake this offseason. They have surrendered a second-round pick in 2010 and a fourth-round pick in 2011 for a 14 game rental of McNabb. And as the head coach you are now interested in having McNabb on the sidelines as a $10 million dollar backup? Are you out of your mind?

As this season draws to a close, I have to believe more and more that Mike Shanahan was not the right hire for the Washington Redskins. He has divided the locker room, he has totally mis-handled the Albert Haynesworth issue. And now, he continues to make seriously questionable calls.

I’ve written in this column that the redskins need to gut the current system and start from scratch, but I seriously don’t think that is going to happen with Mike Shanahan and Bruce Allen running the show. I don’t know why this has become such a dysfunctional team, but I see no hope of reversing the course with the decisions coming out of the front office currently.

Redskins QB McNabb wants to stay with the Redkins in 2011, Seriously?

Washington Redskins QB Donovan McNabb wants to start with the Redskins in 2011? Seriously? Why? According to NBCsports, McNabb says he feels disrespected by head coach Mike Shanahan but says he still wants to return to the Redskins in 2011. Again, why?

McNabb wants to return so he can be jerked around for another season in 2011? Perhaps next season, head coach Mike Shanahan can bench him for 4 games instead of three. The Washington Redskins with the father/son duo running the show, if I were McNabb, I’d want out at the first available opportunity. A trade to Seattle? He’s packing his bags. Buffalo, he’s on his iPhone looking for the best wing joint. Tennessee? McNabb is loving some blues and BBQ. Anything to get away from the trainwreck in Washington.

There is no clear cut direction. And while some analysts have stated that McNabb might be on the downside of his career, he can still be successful next year with some offensive weapons.

Washington Redskins not doing a very good job of laying down

Yesterday morning on the NFL Network pregame show, there was a discussion regarding internal reports that the Washington Redskins were trying to lose the last three games of the season in order to put themselves in position to draft one of the top quarterbacks in next years draft.

Well, if that was the plan, somebody forgot to tell starter Rex Grossman. Mid-way through the 4th quarterback, Grossman had the Redskins tied 30-30 with the Dallas Cowboys. Grossman had an impressive debut with the Redskins passing for 322 yards and four touchdowns. Grossman also led the Redskins to their highest offensive point production of the season.

Michael Lombardi reported in the pre-game show on the NFL Network, ” The move to Rex Grossman, I’ve been told reliably by people in the Washington organization, has nothing to do with him being the quarterback of the future. It’s about them being in position next year to draft a quarterback”. If this report is indeed true, this should become a big news story this week. Fans have long speculated that teams did indeed drop games at the end of the season intentionally as to not jeopardize their draft position, but this is the first time that a report from an organizational source has been reported.

The league has worked very hard to maintain the integrity of the game, and these comments, if true, mean that the Redskins are indeed not trying to win their last three games. But someone might want to tell that to Rex Grossman.

Is there a plan in place for the Washington Redskins?

Is there a plan in place for the Washington Redskins, seriously? There doesn’t seem to be one. Once Mike Shanahan was hired and the Redskins traded for veteran QB Donovan McNabb, there was talk of the Redskins returning to the playoffs. That isn’t happening and what a strange 15 weeks it has been. The drama started in the offseason with Albert Haynesworth and it’s just gotten worse.

A series of strange moves, stranger excuses, moves that should have been made and disappointment on the playing field has made up the Redskins 2010 season, and quite frankly, I expect more of the same in 2011. There was the Donovan McNabb benching against the Detroit Lions followed shortly after with a new contract followed by another benching. Somewhere in between were about 4 separate reasons from Mike Shanahan regarding the benching of McNabb.

How productive would have the Redskins offense been this season with the free agent signing of Terrell Owens? Say what you will about Owens but he has nearly as many touchdowns as the three top receivers of the Redskins combined. Or perhaps the Redskins should have tried hard to pry Steve Smith away from the 1-11 Carolina Panthers.

What’s the long-term plan at running back? Does Bruce Allen try to talk Jerome Bettis out of retirement next season? Ryan Torain has looked good at times, but he can’t stay healthy.

Can the Redskins switch to a 3-4 defense this season now be considered a failure? Washington is surrendering nearly 400 yards a game and has the #32nd ranked defense. There are a handful of players which should be retained, and the others jettisoned.

What are the long term plans for the offensive line? Quarterback? Are there any plans in place? I see very little progress being made. Yes, the Redskins have won one more game than they did last season, but this is a bad team.

It’s time to scrap the majority of this team and start over. The stop gap measures have not worked this season and if the plug and play approach is taken again next season, expect about the same results as you saw this season, another sub-.500 season.

Redskins fans are loyal fans, but they do not deserve season after season of less than mediocre teams. The Redskins fans could endure another season of losing if there was indeed a long-term plan in place instead of the constant helter-skelter moves and decisions which are being made.
