Thomas Bach as a current president of International Olympic Committee believes that esports won’t be at Olympics for very long time. Games that “promote” violence or include violence, such as killing etc. won’t be included to Olympic games.
Bach told to the press: “We cannot have in the Olympic programme a game which is promoting violence or discrimination.”
Which is quite interesting statement, when Olympic Games include: boxing, martial arts, shooting, fencing, archery and many other combat sports or sports, where you are using a weapon. FYI Bach before he became president for ICO was and Olympic gold medalist fencer.
Bach combated this point with: “Of course very combat sport has its origins in a real fight among people. But sport is the civilized expression about this. If you have games/esports where it is about killing somebody, this cannot be brought into line with our Olympic values.”
CS:Go, Fortnite,PUGB,COD,Overwatch, DOta 2, LOL – these are currently most played esport svideo games in the whole world. Yes all of these games are about killing, but there is also a lot of popular esports games, which are not about killing and violence. For example Rocket League or even FIFA/MADDEN/NHL/NBA non of these are about killing and are very competitive games. Or Hearthstone is a card game, which is one of the most played games in the world right now. But choosing a right game for Olympics is not the issue. The committee might be scared, that if they let in one game, they will have to do the same for other games in future.
Even thought IOC definitely did not recognize that esports is something that should be part of Olympic games, not only because of the popularity, but because these players put more work and hours sometimes, than other athletes on Olympic games. But this is not the end, more than 150 representatives from esports and video games will continue to discuss this matter.
